The town purchased 50 collection containers for biodegradable waste from Norway grants

After energy, industry and agriculture, waste management is the fourth largest source of greenhouse gases in the European Union. The main source of emissions are waste landfills.

The main source of greenhouse gases generated in landfills is biodegradable waste. Its decomposition under anaerobic conditions produces landfill gas. Approximately 1,296,347 tons of municipal waste are deposited in landfills in the Slovak Republic annually.

Increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere indicate an increase in the global average temperature, which may lead to potentially catastrophic climate change. Of the total weight of municipal waste, which is currently deposited in the Slovak Republic in landfills or burned in waste incinerators, 35 to 70% can be used by composting.

Composting of biological waste is considered by experts to be one of the effective means of reducing CO2 production during human activity and thus also a means of combating global warming. The potential for CO2 savings by composting at the point of origin of biological waste is great in Slovakia.

Composting biodegradable waste at the place of their origin is the most effective in this regard. By recycling biological waste through composting, it is possible to contribute to a more effective fight against climate change, because the quality of the soil is improved and the sequestration of carbon dioxide in the soil is achieved. The goal of the city of Brezno in this area is to reduce the amount of waste disposed of by landfilling and to ensure the ecological recovery of biodegradable waste.

Fulfillment of the mentioned goal will be achieved by the implementation of measures related to the creation of an infrastructure for the collection of biodegradable waste. The project's contribution to the stated goal is the purchase of 50 biodegradable waste containers with a volume of 1,100 liters. This will contribute to the creation of a system of comprehensive disposal of waste biomass in one of the most natural and ecological forms - composting of these organic wastes. These containers are located at container stands across the entire town.

By ensuring the collection and recovery of biodegradable waste, the amount of mixed municipal waste will be reduced by the component of biodegradable types of waste, and consequently the expensive and environmentally burdensome landfilling of waste will be prevented.

The collection of biodegradable waste will be carried out in the cadastral territory of the town Brezno. The recovery itself will be carried out at the compost plant in Brezno. As a result of the implementation of this measure, a complex infrastructure system for the collection and efficient recovery of biodegradable waste in town Brezno will be solved in accordance with the legislative provisions of the Slovak Republic and the directives of the European Union.
