The action plan for climate change mitigation and adaptation in the town Brezno is based on the vision of active cooperation between the city, representatives of relevant city organizations, external partners and city residents in implementing the necessary adaptation and mitigation measures to eliminate the negative effects of climate change.
The aim is to ensure adequate quality of the living and natural environment, protection of health, property and create long-term conditions for the quality of life of the inhabitants and visitors of the city.
What does the climate change bring?
The management of the town Brezno perceives the need to respond to current and anticipated climate
changes in the urban environment. That is why it is trying to increase resistance to climate to change and
improve the ability to respond to the negative consequences of climate change through investment and non-
investment projects. One of the activities is the processing of strategic document „Action plan for climate
change mitigation and adaptation in the town Brezno.“
The main goal of this strategy, elaborated in 2023, is to propose and compile a set of measures that will help
to adapt the town of Brezno to the natural conditions resulting from the changing climate. These are based on
the analysis of the current state, the identification of vulnerable places and the potential for adaptation to a
changing climate.
Future successful adaptation to climate change will lead to lower vulnerability of people and nature and higher
resistance to adverse events (higher resilience).
The quality of life, the environment, the safety of residents and the economic and social development will not
be endangered in the same time.
The development of the Action Plan was an important part of the project and aimed to:
- assess the development of the climate and the main manifestations of climate change in the town of Brezno
- assess the current degree of vulnerability of the territory
- plan specific measures leading to the limitation of vulnerability and strengthening of resilience
- set procedures and processes in the town, leading to implementation of individual measures
- start the implementation of the first measures, including determining responsibilities and funding sources
The resulting strategic document is a modern and practically processed file, understandable and accessible
both to the town management and to the general public. The action plan was created as a follow-up to already
existing strategic documents at the local, regional, national level and the European Union.
The strategy and action plan has been approved by the Brezno Town City Council and it will represent the basis
for decision-making and the town development, which will react more sensitively to the adverse consequences
of the climate change.
Climate measures can be divided into two basic directions. These aimed at mitigating future
climate change are called mitigation, while measures preparing for the consequences of
climate change are called adaptation.
Adaptation measures help prepare the territory for the inevitable economic, environmental
and social impacts of changes already underway. Their planning and implementation are
therefore necessary even in the event that measures radically reducing greenhouse gas
emissions are implemented.
Mitigation measures help reduce the level of impacts on the territory in the future, and
their implementation is therefore important regardless of the level of current impacts.
