All Saints' Day and Memorial of the Deceased - Where with the waste from grave sites

Among other things, autumn is associated with holidays dedicated to our deceased loved ones. After dark, the cemeteries are full of silent people, lit candles or brightly colored chrysanthemums. All Saints' Day and the Memorial of the Deceased belong to the respected holidays of not only believers in our latitude. However, a large amount of waste is also generated during these festive days.

Where to with waste from cemeteries, how to sort it properly?

We can deal more easily with faded flowers or living wreaths. They belong in organic waste or compost in the garden, as long as they have not yet introduced sorted collection at the cemetery. It is important to remove ribbons, foil or wire or plastic supports from flowers that have bloomed before throwing them away. It is worse with artificial flowers, baubles or other decorations, made of several materials that cannot be separated and therefore not even recycled. So they end up in a container intended for mixed waste, the last route of which goes to the landfill. They have been decaying there for hundreds of years. We can avoid this in two ways. Either we do not buy ornaments made of combined materials, we prefer ornaments made of natural materials, or we buy ornaments made of one material, which we can throw away at the end of their useful life in the correct container for sorted collection.

Glass-blowing burner and wax residues also cause problems

A large number of candles in plastic or glass packaging is also a big problem. If they are not sorted, they end up in landfills, where they turn into "eternal waste". The glass parts of the bream belong to the glass waste, plastic or metal parts that can be separated from the glass container, we place them in the appropriate container or bag for sorted collection. Unfortunately, the wax ends up in mixed waste, unless we can reuse it, for example to make new candles.

So, how to burden nature and landfills as little as possible during these holidays?

Instead of artificial flowers, wreaths and other decorations, we will bring live flowers in a pot to the graves of our loved ones. They are more beautiful, they can last until the first frost and they are affordable. We can also bet on decoration made of natural materials - cones,

dried flowers or needles. If we already have glass jars or candlesticks, let's use them as long as possible. As an alternative, we can use candles made of soy or beeswax. Even natural materials will one day end up as waste. Let's sort live flowers without plastic packaging, ribbons and wires, flowers from pots, weeds, leaves and branches so that they don't end up in the landfill unnecessarily. If containers for sorted waste are not available at the cemetery, we take the waste with us and sort it at home.

If we sort correctly, the world is more beautiful

Keep the following rules in mind:

  • Try not to create waste at all.
  • Backup packaging does not belong in the trash, return it to the store.
  • Follow the color alphabet of sorting: glass is green, paper is blue, plastic is yellow, metal is red and beverage cartons are orange. The label on the packaging will also tell you:

Follow the classification rules of your municipality.

  • Only sorted waste can be evaluated and recycled.
  • Sort waste, it's worth it. The citizen does not pay for sorted waste, its collection is paid for by producers through OZV ENVI - PAK.
