A blooming cyclist and 14 city meadows. Brezno reacts to climate change

Less noise, dust and sunlight, more water, humidity and diversity of animal species. The Center of Horehronie is trying to adapt to the consequences of global warming by massively planting greenery.

Brezno municipality received almost 92 thousand euros for the construction of new green infrastructure.

Cities need to cool down

The current trend, which appears to be an effective tool in the fight against climate change at the local level, is the establishment of meadow communities directly in the urban environment. Brezno is up to date and, thanks to external resources, it is currently expanding green areas, which will be dominated by flowering plant species. It is part of the project called Action plan and measures of the town Brezno aimed at mitigating the consequences of climate change, which should lead to increased resistance to climate change as well as the ability to react to its negative effects.

"The aim of these measures is to achieve cooling of the environment by supporting and retaining air humidity, reducing temperature differences and solar radiation by shading exposed surfaces, trapping solid pollutants and allergens in the air, dampening noise and, last but not least, improving the state of biodiversity in the city," said Mayor Tomáš Abel. For the implementation of this activity, the municipality received funds from the Norwegian Financial Mechanism and the state budget in the amount of almost 92 thousand euros.

Plant sculpture and vertical garden

Work on the preparation and planting of green areas with a total area of almost 100 ares is currently being carried out by the company from Trnava, which won the public procurement process, and will last until the end of November this year. New meadow communities, which, compared to ordinary lawns, will not require demanding maintenance, are already gradually increasing in 14 locations on ŠLN, ČSA, Krčulova, Švermova, Jilemnického, Kuzmányho streets, as well as on Mazorníkovo and Hron embankment. However, it does not end with urban meadows.

As informed by the head of the project management department, Milada Šimkovičová, the concept includes, in addition to the construction of natural elements to increase humidity and water retention in various parts of the town, the establishment of an exterior vertical garden in the yard on Square Gen. M. R. Štefánika 2. "One stand on Malinovského street was also chosen as a pilot site, on which a green wall, i.e. a wall overgrown with vegetation, will be built. At the intersection of ČSA and Hradby streets, a green island has already been planted, as well as a statue of a cyclist, while plants have been planted in its structure," explained Šimkovičová. The project also plans to support the expansion of bee colonies, butterflies and insects by installing 14 insect houses. The actual effect of the individual measures will be visible in the spring of next year and to the maximum extent roughly a year later during the growing season.
